1856, on a buying trip to Europe he purchased or acquired by gift 17,000 volumes for the Assembly's library which had been destroyed in two fires.
1873, Special Advisor to Governor General Lord Dufferin.
His book: On parliamentary government in England (1867-69) was translated into French, German, Spanish and Italian.
