Advocacy That Works: Build the Relationships Before You Need Them
with Ken Haycock

Much of what we believe about advocacy is wrong. It is not publicity, lobbying, marketing, or a once-a-year campaign. Effective advocacy is planned, deliberate, sustained—and built on relationships. Drawing on more than fifty years of advocacy, research, and training, Ken Haycock explores what actually influences decision-makers, why credibility and trust matter, and how professionals can build support long before they need to ask for it. Participants will leave with practical strategies for building relationships, strengthening influence, and developing support over time.

Dr. Ken Haycock has been recognized nationally and internationally for his work as an advocate and researcher at the intersection of libraries and politics. He wrote his first book on advocacy fifty years ago and, most recently, led an international research team applying principles of influence to political decision-making around library and funding issues in academic, public, corporate, and school settings. The findings offer important insights for the advocacy challenges facing our field today.
